MIDWINTER WEATHER
EXPERIENCED ON WEST COAST. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH. January 17. With a temperature of 42 degrees at 9 a.m. and a maximum of 56 degrees at 3 p.m. Greymouth experienced midwinter weather today. There were' frequent falls of hail throughout the day and a heavy snowfall on the Southern Alps as low as Cass on the eastern side and a considerable distance down the western Otira Gorge road.
Monday's gales ceased overnight, (hough occasional strong gusts of southwest wind accompanied today's rain and hail.
Telegraph and telephone traffic between Otira'and Kumara. on the Grey-mouth-Christchurch circuit, were again interrupted this morning by trees falling on the wires, but the breaks were repaired by midday. Tonight heavy showers continue, with prospects for an exceptionally cold night.
