SHEARER’S AWARD
INTERPRETATION BY FARMERS’ UNION.
QUESTION OF KEEP RAISED.
In response to a number of requests. Mr James Watson, Provincial Secretary of the Farmers’ Union, has obtained the following interpretation of Lie Shearers’ Award from the New Zealand Farmers’ Union:
“If a man is engaged by a farmer and does no live on the place he has to be paid 4s a day for his keep and this payment must be continued until the shearing is finished no matter whether a large amount of wet weather intervenes.”'
“It seems to me,” the advice continued, “that this provision of the award might well be altered. The idea was when the provision was instituted that a man was forced to hang about the place with no opportunity of doing anv other work, whereas if he has a chance ci’ picking up other work during the wet weather and does so it does not. stem reasonable that his keep should also have to be paid. However, the provision of the award must be observed.”
