PEACE & TORCHES
DANISH GARDENER’S PROTEST. OBJECTION TO BLACKOUT. An unusual protest against air defence exercises led to the arrest of a gardener, Knud Nordgaard, aged 35, who for idealistic reasons organised a protest against the darkening of Roskilde, near Copenhagen, which had been ordered for three days and nights. Nordgaard wrote articles in the local newspapers urging Pacifists to have torchlight processions on the darkened nights in order “to show the world that not everybody wants to join in preparations for the next imperialistic world war.”
When the police found that all the fireworks in Roskilde had been sold to Pacifists they arrested Nordgaard, and wanted to detain him until after the the exercises; but the court found that there was no case, and released the unusual protester.
