A COWARDLY ATTACK
CONSTABLE ASSAULTED. ACCUSED SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WAIROA, January 16. Charged with assaulting a constable and resisting arrest, Fred Ratoru Kirk, aged 27, Morere, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment by justices of the peace in the Magistrates’ Court, Wairoa. According to the police, Constable W. Houston visited Morere Hotel on Friday to interview accused and as he was leaving the hotel accused turned- on him, striking him on the head and nearly stunning'him. When the constable attempted to arrest him accused used his boots. The constable was suffering from extensive bruises. The Bench described the act as a dirty and cowardly thing to do. Kirk was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative.
