The Hon H. G. R. Mason. AttorneyGeneral, is expected to return to Wellington today from Auckland.
The Hon W. Lee Martin. Minister of Agriculture, returned to Wellington yesterday from Rotorua, where on Saturday he opened the Rotorua Show. The Hon H. T. Armstrong. Minister of Housing, inspected the State housing schemes in Dunedin during the weekend. He is expected to return to Wellington toward the end of the week.
The funeral took place in Masterton this morning of the late Mr James Lyddy, leaving St Patrick’s Church for the Masterton Cemetery. Services were conducted at the church and the ■graveside by the Rev Father Dillon. The pall-bearers were members of the St Vincent de Paul Society, and personal friends of deceased.
The death occurred at Dannevirke on Saturday night of Mr Carl Ludwig Thomsen, who was manager of the Dannevirke branch of the W.F.C.A. The late Mr Thomsen was born at Norsewood in 1881 and joined the W.F.C.A. staff in 1919, being appointed manager about two years later. He was highly esteemed for his many personal qualities. The funeral took place at Dannevirke today. The following appointments to teaching positions in its district have been made by the Wellington Education Board: —Mr F. H. Clift, assistant. Masterton Central, from Levin. Mr C. K. Scott, assistant, Muritai, from Hamua. Miss E. S. D. Whyte, assistant. Masterton Central, from Otago. Miss O. Stansell, assistant, Kahutara. from the relieving staff. Miss E. A. Mills, assistant, Koromiko, from the relieving staff. Miss D. C. Peterson, assistant, Whatman, from Lansdowne. The Australian High Commissioner in London. Mr S. M. Bruce, will pass through Auckland by the Mariposa, which is due from Los Angeles on Friday. Mr Bruce has been conducting parleys in Washington on trade between the United States and Australia. He is on his way to confer with the Commonwealth Cabinet. In honour of Mr Bruce and of the Premier of Ontario, the Hon M. F. Hepburn, and the Minister of Public Works in Ontario, the Hon C. A. Campbell, who are also passengers by the Mariposa, a State luncheon will be given at the Grand Hotel. Auckland, on Friday. The Government will be represented by the Minister of Education, Mr Fraser. Mr Hepburn and Mr Mitchell are on their way to Australia as guests ..of the Commonwealth. The death occurred at Christchurch on Sunday of the Very Rev Father Patrick J. Cooney. Father Cooney, who was parish priest at Lyttelton for 38 years, had been in failing health for some time. He was one of the bestknown priests in the Dominion, and will long be remembered as a man of scholarly attainments, an able speaker, and a controversialist. Father Cooney was born in Limerick City, Ireland, and pursued his ecclesiastical studies at the Gregorian University in Rome. At the conclusion of his studies he was ordained by the late Bishop Grimes, who invited him to take a post in New Zealand. After holding short ministries in Ashburton, Rangiora and Kumara, he was appointed to Lyttelton pastorate, charge of which he retained till his death. Father Cooney was a member of the Diocesan Council of the Church.
