BOWLING
MASTERTON PARK CLUB. CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITIONS. Championship rinks. —As was expected the match played on Saturday afternoon between the two remaining fours —Drummond, Jenkins. Roff, Jobson (s) with two lives, and Emerson. Spackman, Southey. Kilgour (s). one "life” —proved to be one of the most closely contested seen on the Park green this season. Bowling conditions were good. A large bank of spectators thoroughly enjoyed the contest and were impartial with frequent outbursts of applause. Both teams played perfectly, with the position changing with nearly every bowl, Kilgour eventually being victorious by 18/15. The final game in this competition which, owing to the visit of the Manawatu bowlers on February 4 has necessitated the Booth Cup games drawn for that date being changed to next Saturday, has been set down for January 28, will be anxiously looked forward to by all who delight in a masterly exposition of the game. Interhouse match—On Friday evening the Blacksmiths and Engineers, represented by J. Ewington, H. Ewington, Shearer, Vincent (s) met Carr. Braggins.' Buckley, Denbee (s) representing the Borough Council. In addition to its primary object as a game of bowls between two well-matched teams, the contest was arranged as a social gathering to give a send off to three of the players who,' although about to enjoy a well-earned retirement from their respective professions, are still active bowlers. The three players referred to are T. T. Denbee and P. Buckley, of the Borough rink, and H. Ewington. one of the representatives of the Blacksmiths and Engineers. For many years these two teams have met in friendly rivalry, with always varying results, and Friday’s contest left the decision as to which is the better combination still in doubt as the game resulted in a draw, both sides scoring 20 points. The game at the finish of the twentieth head looked like a victory for the Blacksmiths as the board then read 20/15 in their favour but the final head told a different tale. When the skips went down for the last time the Borough team were lying three up. Denbee. who had been playing splendid bowls right through, drew two perfect shots. Vincent endeavoured to burn the head but did not succeed, which gave his opponent the five points required. At the conclusion of the game Messrs Shearer and Braggins wished the retiring members of the teams every happiness in their respective retirements from their business lives, and hoped that they would ill be spared for many years to enjoy their well-earned rest. Mr Denbee, in reply, thanked the previous speakers for their remarks. He thanked the members of both teams for the enjoyable games he had had, with an extra word of thanks to the Park Club, who had always been so pleased to prepare a good rink for the games. Cheers for the retiring players terminated a most enjoyable social event.
