CONCERN IN NEW SOUTH WALES

The Premier, Mr Stevens, announced today that the Government is greatly concerned at the rapid deW”)oration of the Burrinjuck Dam in southern New South Wales, as lisclosed by overseas engineering exI erts who report that the dam. in major flood conditions, would be a source of danger to the population in the in mediate neighbourhood. Expert examination revealed that the concrete walls are in the process of disintegration and remedial measures are urgently necessary. The cost would be in the vicinity of £1,750.000. The Cabinet, said Mr Stevens, had adopted the report and work would be provided for upward of 400 men lor. from five to seven years.
The original capacity of . the dam was 745 000 acre-feet of water. Plans for the safety of persons who would be in the path of floods if the dam burst herd been prepared by the Government.
