RAILWAY ACCOUNTS
WORKING LOSS REPLACES PROFIT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. A retrograde movement to the extent of £233,781 is shown by the railways working account for the period from April 1 to December 11 last, compared with the result for the corresponding period of- the previous year. According to the abstract of the account, published in the "Gazette" last night, a working loss of £2256 replaces a profit of £231.525 for the corresponding period of the previous year. The effect on railway finances of the increase of 10 per cent in passenger fares and freight charges is not yet reflected in the accounts, as it operated from December 11.
Revenue for the period April 1 to December 11 was £5,968,199, an increase of £296,297 on the gross revenue year. Expenditure amounted to £5,440,377. an increase of £530,078. Net revenue for the four-weekly period ended December 10 was £90,265. as against £61.116 in the corresponding period of 1937. The gross revenue was £764.506. compared with £677.498. an increase of £87,008, and gross expenditure £674,241, compared with £616.382, an increase of £57,859.
