CARTERTON

BIRTHDAY PARTY.

MR B. R. RAYNER HONOURED. ("Times-Age” Special.) The band room at Carterton was crowded last night with old and young, including visitors from all parts of the Wairarapa, who assembled to do honour to Mr Ben R. Rayner on the occasion of his 74th birthday. It was one of the happiest and most sociable functions held in Carterton over a long number of years. Two Scotch dances were given by Miss Hall, and were much appreciated. Just before the supper adjournment Mr Gordon Hughan in a happy speech proposed the health of the guest of the evening, which was toasted with enthusism, and the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Supper was provided and enjoyed after which further dancing and singing was indulged in.

Before the festivities commenced, the Pipe band played one of Mr Rayner’s favourite airs, and during the evening provided the music for a waltz, having to respond to an encore. At the conclusion of the gathering “Auld Lang Syne” was sung. Among the guests present was Mr Rayner’s family and his grand children. The wish was expressed by those present that Mr Rayner would live to enjoy many another such happy birthday. The dance music was played by Mrs V. J. Ashton, and Messrs Tom and Gordon Udy in their usual excellent manner. Personal Items.
