BETTER HIGHWAYS

HON W. E. PARRY PRAISES DEPARTMENTS. PUBLIC WORKS AND TRANSPORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 10. “In the ten days of the Christmas and New Year holidays,’’ said the Hon W. E. Parry today, he had heard enough praise of the Public Works and Transport Departments by users of the highways to justify all connected with the policy, administration and work of these Departments feeling proud of their achievements. More efficient transport facilities, with less traffic congestion and accidents, had provided another side to New Zealand’s sturdy enterprise and sound reputation in public affairs. One commercial traveller, in referring to ramps over the railways, had said in a group with whom he had a discussion that each should bear a monument to Mr Semple. With these alone he must have saved hundreds of lives and engine-drivers from early retirement to nurse their nerves.
