CHAMPIONSHIP BOWLS

TOURNAMENT AT AUCKLAND SENSATION IN SINGLES. RESULTS OF FIRST DAY'S PLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The New Zealand Bowling tournament was continued this afternoon, a feature of the play being the extremely high standard. The sensation of the day and probably of the tournament was the twopoint defeat in Section V of Frank Livingstone, Onehunga, the present champion of Australia and the Dominion winner in 1936 at Christchurch. His conqueror was W. H. Jones (Whakalane club), the score being 18-16. The first really noteworthy result of the tourney was the 34-3 victory of H. J Richards (Devonport) over J. Brown (Carlton). This was at the Carlton headquarters, where 22 players were in the section, compared with 16 in all others.

At St Heliers, in Section T. the youthful Neil Thomson, who some years ago before the age of 20 was the Auckland champion of champions, fell to Gray (Kelburn), 11-14, the latter player taking the place of a clubmate, M. Routley.

At the Auckland green H. C. Clarke (1927 Dominion champion) in Section 11. beat C, P. Cross (father of the English champion),. 24-11. At Remuera, K. I, Cross (champion of England), beat E. V. Sutherland, 22-17, and W. D. Bennett (the Dominion champion), playing at Rawhiti in Section R, beat W. W. Edgerley (New Lynn). At Devonport, in Section B, J. M. Brackenridge (national Champion of 1921 and Wellington champion of champions for the last three years) had a hard tussle with W. W. Rummins CManurewa,) 15-13.

At the close of the day's play the following remain in the competition:—
