PACT WANTED
ON LINES OF TREATY WITH IRAK
GRAND MUFTI’S DEMAND FOR PALESTINE. BOYCOTT OF CONFERENCE ANTICIPATED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. BEIRUT. January 8. The Grand Mufti will not endorse the Arab delegation to the London Conference on the Palestine problem unless Britain promises an Anglo-Pal-estine treaty similar to the Anglo-Irak pacts. His supporters say that this is tantamount to an Arab boycott of the conference.
A treaty concluded between Britain and Irak in 1930 defines the relations between them as on terms of “complete freedom, equality and independence.” provides for consultation in matters of foreign policy of common interest, gives an undertaking of consistency of foreign policy, provides for diplomatic representation, establishes methods of conference in the event of a rupture of relations with a third State, and pledges military support in event of a war. The treaty runs for 25 years.
MOVE BY ARABS MEMORANDUM TO MUSSOLINI AND POPE. INTERVENTION URGED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) ROME, January 9. Issa Bandak, Secretary of the Palestine National Arab Committee, has sent a memorandum to Signor Mussolini and the Pope urging intervention for a settlement in Palestine. The memorandum demands that no Jewish State be established on the shores of the Mediterranean and that the Grand Mufti be allowed to negotiate at the London Conference.
