MASTERTON WEATHER.

SUMMARY FOR DECEMBER.

The Masterton weather recorder (Miss A. M. Brown) supplies the following summary for December (figures for December, 1937 being given in parentheses):—

Pressure at 9 a.m. standard time: — Highest, 30.35 on 28th (30.44); lowest, 29.48 on 20th (29.87).

Temperature:—Absolute shade maximum, 80.1 on 2nd (92.0); absolute shade minimum. 34.5 on 18th (38.4). Thus the range was 45.6 (53.6). Mean temperature for the month, 57.6 (64.0). Absolute grass minimum, 25.5 on 28th (27.7); average grass minimum, 39.4 (43.4); average at 1 foot underground. 61.9 (65.2). Severest frost. 4.9 degrees on night of 28th (2.7). Days of frost (grass minimum 30.3 degrees Fahr, or lower), 3 <1); of shade temperature below 32 degrees Fahr.. 0 (0); of gale, 10 (3).

Total rainfall, 4.61 inches on 18 days (1.91 inches on 9 days); greatest fall, 1.72 inches on 4th (97 points). Total sunshine, 232.5 hours (251.0 hours); daily average, 7.5; sunniest day, 14.2 hours on 10th (14.4); windrun, 3408 miles (1977); average. 109.9 (63.8).

The total rainfall for 1938 was 46.19 inches on 186 days. In 1937 31.56 inches fell, there being 158 days with rain.

LONGBUSH RAINFALL.

Mr A. C. Gawilh, Waikoukou, Longbush, reports that in December 5.04 inches of rain fell. The average lor December of the previous year is 3.02 inches.

Miss A. M. Brown reports as follows for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. today:— Barograph, 29.82. Shade temperature: Maximum 76.1, minimum 57.0, terrestrial 49.6. Sunshine, 5 hours 15 min. Rain, a trace.

General situation: Pressure is very low to the east of the South Island but is rising generally with the slow approach of an anti-cyclone from the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Strong west to south-west winds of gale force at times, but gradually decreasing and later turning to north-west. Weather: Changeable with a few scattered showers but mainly fair. Temperatures moderate.
