HAWAIIAN SWIMMER
FIRST APPEARANCE IN SYDNEY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 7. At the North Sydney Olympic Pool tonight the Hawiian swimmer Kiyoshi Nakama made his debut by winning the 440 yards New South Wales championship by less than a yard from Robbin Biddulph, of Manly, with Noel Ryan, of Manly, third. Nakama’s time of 4.52 equalled the Australian record made by the American champion Medica in January, 1937. Biddulph’s time was 4.53 and Ryan’s 5.6 1-5. .
The critics say that Biddulph would have won in a few more yards. He staged a dazzling finish despite only 21 weeks’ training.
