PARTY DIVISIONS

MR ROOSEVELT’S FIGHTING SPEECH

“TWEEDLEDUMS” INVITED TO LEAVE. PLAIN TALK TO DEMOCRATS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WASHINGTON, January 7. Clearly recognising that divisions of opinion are threatening his hold on Congress, President Roosevelt, in a fighting speech to-night, invited the “conservative Tweedledums ’ to leave the party and join the Republican “Tweedledees.” The President declared that the Democrats must hold fast to _ New Deal obectives and avoid dissension or the risk of repudiation in 1940. He also warned them that, if the party nominated a conservative or an opportunist as President, its control of power would be short-lived.

’ Decrying alarmist reports of disunity, President Roosevelt pointed out that he was the first President since James Monroe to serve two terms with majorities in both Legislatures. He added that the only trouble with the Democrats was they had been feeding too well and got scared too easily.
