Eastern Province scored 172 in their first, innings (Southey 46, Dimbleby 33. Bowling: Fames five for 58, Wright four for 54). M.C.C. scored 237 for one at stumps (Gibb 51, Hutton, not out. 152, Paynter, not out, 57). Dimbleby, a promising schoolboy, was impressive. SHEFFIELD SHIELD. S. AUSTRALIA v QUEENSLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. BRISBANE, January 7. South Australia v Queensland:— Queensland, first innings, 325 for seven (D. Tallon 115, Stibe 58, Baker 80). Three of Queensland's best batsmen, including Brown, were out for 28 when the wicketkeeper Tallon came to the rescue and stopped the rot. WELLINGTON COMPETITION. FOUR CENTURIES SCORED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Heavy scoring marked the resumption of the senior cricket cornpetitionon Saturday after the break caused by the holidays. With firm wickets and fast outfields, batsmen helped themselves freely to runs and no fewer than four centuries were registered. Chief interest centred in the match between Institute Old Boys and Wellington on Kelburn Park, as C. S. Dempster, captain of the Leicester County team, had rejoined the Institute team. The crowd which assembled enjoyed a display of rapid scoring such as is rarely seen in club cricket. Wellington’s first innings of 220 was a one-man affair, as R. T. Morgan claimed 105 of the score, and was unbeaten at the finish. Then Dempster and R. Crook put on 176 for Institute's first wicket, Crook being bowled by Morgan for 56. With as finished a display of free scoring as he has ever given in Wellington, Dempster hit up 127 in 95 minutes before dragging a ball from Ell on to his wicket. Dempster showed himself a greatly improved batsman, and delighted the crowd with the 20 boundary shots he made. At the call of time Institute had 227 runs on for the loss of four wickets. The Karori batsmen were also among the runs on the Karori ground. The side ran up 328 against Universiy, J. Duffy (118) and M. Browne (135) both registering centuries. T. A. Harpin' did great execution with his slow left-handed spinners for University, his tally being seven wickets for 54 runs Al call of time the students had scored 43 for two wickets.
Brilliant bowling by R. O’Neill, who captured seVen wickets for 65 tun*,
saw Midland dismiss Wellington College Old Boys for 212. Midland lost 4 wickets for 103. Good bowling by C. K. Parsloe and J. Ashenden enabled Kilbirnie to dismiss'Hutt for the modest total of 142. Small as this score was, it was quite large enough for Kilbirnie. who lost seven wickets for 102 runs. DUNEDIN GAMES. DUNEDIN, January 8. Rain caused stoppages and the early abandonment of play. Conditions were all in favour of the batsmen, but Kaikorai was the only team to score well. Scores: Kaikorai, 202 for two wickets (Talbot not out 82. Mathias not our 77). met Carisbrook B. Others games were: Grange. 91 for three wickets, v Dunedin. Old Boys. 120 for four wickets, v University. Albion, 39 for three wickets, v Cariihrbok A.
