SEVEN LIONS SHOT
ONLY NINE BULLETS USED. ENCOUNTER ON ROADSIDE. JOHANNESBURG. December 22. Seven lions in nine successive shots is the record of Mr Tom Hughes, a motor mechanic, when travelling between Livingstone and Maun. He saw eight lions near the road and dropped seven of them. The eighth ran off unharmed. Mr Hughes loaded six of the lions and took them into Maun. There was only one rifle in the car, a 9.3 Mauser. Mr Hughes stopped the car, got out and fired as quickly as he could. He killed three, the biggest males, with one shot each. He wounded a big lioness, which was accompanied by two three-quarter grown cubs. The lioness came for him, but halted for a second or two at a distance of 20 yards. Mr Hughes put a bullet between her eyes. Four more shots brought down three more.
Mr Hughes left the wounded lion in the bush as there was only one rifle. It was roaring loudly but could not be seen. It was later shot at by someone, who found that it was already dead. Mr Hughes is 23 years of age and was recently a member of the Bechuanaland Police.
