TOWN BOMBARDED
FOLLOWING ON EARLIER FIGHTING REINFORCEMENTS BROUGHT UP ON BOTH SIDES (Received This Day, 10.20 a.m.) , BUDAPEST, January 6. The bombardment of Munkacevo lasted for several hours, a cinema being wrecked and a hotel partly destroyed. The shelling followed earlier fighting in which nine Hungarians were killed. The Government reports that fighting is continuing on the border, although the Czechs have been entirely driven out of Hungarian territory. Troops were rushed to various other points where an attack is feared. It is reported that the Czechs also are bringing up reinforcements. Shelling began from regular Czech/batteries on a hillside within Czech territory but overlooking Munkacevo. Later fierce hand-to-hand fighting occurred in the town, following upon an infantry attack. The Czech losses are not known, but five bodies were found on the outskirts of Munkacevo. It is reported that many civilians were killed or wounded. The town now is hermetically * sealed and nobody is allowed to enter or leave.
