SALE AT FEILDING.

SHEEP PRICES BETTER THAN

EXPECTED.

There was a fairly large entry for the opening Feilding stock sale of the year, when prices, particularly for store sheep, were better than were expected, and most of the offering was cleared at auction.

There was a good sale for some well-grown wether hoggets, the offering being fairly heavy and practically all changed hands. Fat cattle were on a par. and light and unfinished prices reacted accordingly. The store cattle sale was erratic though farmers’ lines sold quite well, but for run cattle the inquiry was slow. Quotations: —

Sheep: Fat sheep, extra prime hoggets, realised 18s 6d to 19s 6d; prime lots, 16s 6d to 17s 6d; lighter, to 16s; prime lambs, 19s to 21s 6d; best wethers. to 20s 2d to 22s 6d: second quality, 18s to 18s 7d; lighter, 16s 6d to 17s lOd; fat ewes, good, 12s to 12s 6d; medium. 10s 7d to 11s; light, to 9s 2d. Store sheep: V/ell-grown w.f. wether lambs made to 18s 7d; medium-sized, 15s 6d to 16s 6d; small, 13s to 14s 3d; backward, 10s to 12s sd; very good b.f. lambs, to 16s; small, to 12s sd; medium, 5s 3d to 6s 8d; cull ewe lambs, to 8s Id; b.f. wethers, to 14s lOd. Store cattle: Boner cows, heavy, made £4 to £4 10s; others, £2 2s 6d to £3 17s 6d; two-year P.A. steers, good, £6 14s to £7 7s 6d; fair, £4 17s 6d; to £5 16s 6d; three-year Hereford steers, to £9 10s.

Fat cattle: P.A. cows, medium prime, made £8 2s 6d; Holstein cows, £5 10s to £6 ss; Jersey cows, £4 to £5 12s 6d; light prime heifers, £6 5s to £6 17s; unfinished, £3 17s 6d to £4 17s 6d. Dairy cattle: Springing heifers, good, made £6 10s to £7 15s; second quality, £5 17s to £6; others, from £4 ss; springing cows, £3 to £6; others, from £4 ss; springing cows, £3 to £6 10s; cows in milk, £4 15s; heifers in milk, £7 Is.

Pigs, Weaners made 17s to £1 ss; slips, to £1 10s.

CARTERTON SALE.

SHEEP AND CATTLE PRICES FIRM.

Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co Ltd., report, a fair yarding came forward for our first sale in 1939. Small pigs were in demand and prices for sheep and cattle were firm on previous sales. At total clearance was made under the hammer at the following prices:

Cattle: —Fat cows, £4 7s 6d, £5 7s 6d, £5 15s to £6 7s 6d; store cows, £3 14s, £3 7s 6d; £4 15s to £4 19s. Cows just calved, to £4; heifers just calved, £4 6s. Yearling steers, £3 to £4 2s 6d; bulls, £3 15s, £4 to £5 15s.

Sheep:—Fat wethers, to 18s; fat ewes, Ils 3d. fat lambs, 18s, ewe lambs, 5s to 10s, wr lambs, 4s lOd to 7s lOd. Pigs: —Weaners, 21s 6d, 225, 25s 6d to 26s 6d; slips, 25s 6d, 26s 6d, 29s 6d to 325; porkers, 375, 41s, 53s to 565; store pigs, 255, 28s 6d to 375; baconers, £3 10s to £3 17s; P.B. Berkshire sows, to £2 2s.
