RIFLE SHOOTING

AUCKLAND MEETING.

WAIRARAPA COMPETITORS SUCCESSFUL.

Favoured with ideal weather the 65th annual meeting of the Auckland Rifle Association at Penrose attracted excellent entries, the numbers greatly exceeding those of recent years. Conditions were far from easy at most of the ranges and the shooting was a trifle erratic, with the exception of that of the leaders.

The championship resulted in a complete rout of the local men, who were considered to have a distinct advantage on their home range. The championship title was won by L. Davies, of the Rangitaiki Club, whose club form this season has been of a high standard. He won from H. C. Percy, of the Alfredton Club, after a tie in the grand aggregate, which called for a shoot-off at 900yds. The winner scored the possible of 15 points against Percy’s 14. Davies also annexed the tyro championship by one point from A. M. Jenkinson. In the service match (300 yards), H. K. Smith (Masterton-Opaki) scored 42 and H. C. Percy 41. H. C. Percy scored 47 in the President’s match (300yds) and H. K. Smith 45, the top score being 50. H. K. Smith was second in the Whangarei match (500 and 600yds) with 69 (the same score as the winner), while H. C. Percy scored 68, McCalmont (MastertonOpaki) 68 and J. W. Curtin (Master-ton-Opaki) 64. J. W. Curtin scored 48 in the Auckland match (800yds), H. K. Smith 47, and H. C. Percy 46. In the Onehunga match (900yds), H. C. Percy (33) was fourth. J. W. Curtin and K. C. Morrison (Alfredton) scored 30 each.

In the Penrose optional aggregate H. C. Percy totalled 113. In the Auckland championship H. C. Percy was second with 194, while H. K. Smith scored 188 and J. W. Curtin 186.
