HUKANUI RESIDENT’S DEATH.

(“Times-Age” Special.) The death took place suddenly at her home at Hukanui on Wednesday of a highly respected resident in the person of Mrs Maren Elizabeth Lawrence. Eorn at Wi Waka 63 years ago, she was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Soren Thomasen and was a pupil of the first Eketahuna school. About 33 years ago she married Mr Allen Lawrence. She leaves a family of three daughters and three sons— Messrs Allen, Ray and Charles Lawrence. and Mesdames Ron Udy (Hukanui), and H. Gardiner (Pahiatua) and Miss Ada Lawrence. The brothers and sister of deceased are Messrs Ras (Atea), Jergen (Rewa), Jens and Bartie Thomasen (Auckland) and- Mrs Brosnahan (Auckland, and formerly of Hukanui). The funeral took place this afternoon at Eketahuna. Mean Theft. During the holiday period a number of the coloured lights in the Eketahuna business centre were stolen. Excellent Business. During the Christmas-New Year period excellent business was done by local shops. Cricket Matches. The draw for Saturday in the Bush Cricket Association's competition is as follows: —Pahiatua v. Fire Brigade, at Pahiatua; Eketahuna v. Mangamaire. Eketahuna Stock Sales. There was keen interest in the Eketahuna stock sales yesterday as breeders were anxious to see how the market for store lambs would open up. Buyers were present from all over the Wairarapa and the Manawatu, and bidding was for the most part was spirited and some really good sales were recorded. MEETING OF CRICKET CLUB. NEW CAPTAIN APPOINTED. A meeting of the Eketahuna Cricket Club was held last night. The resignation of Mr McGregor, who is taking up his residence at Pongaroa, as captain was received with regret. He was presented with a pair of batting gloves in appreciation of his help and leadership during the past seven years. Several speakers referred in eulogistic terms to the assistance which Mr McGregor had rendered the game of cricket in Eketahuna, and to his advice and coaching which had been of the utmost value to players. Mr McGregor’s removal from Eketahuna was very much regretted and his place would be very hard to fill. Cricketers generally would wish Mr McGregor success and happiness in the future, and the hope was expressed that Eketahuna cricketers would have the pleasure some day of again participating in a game with Mr McGregor.

Mr H. Higginson was elected to the position of captain. Mr R. Mount joy brought up the question of the new l.b.w. rule, and stated that there was some confusion in connection therewith. Other speakers also referred to the matter, and it was ultimately decided that the secretary write to the Bush Cricket Association for an explanation of the l.b.w. rule. Eketahuna v. Mangamaire.
