SHOPLIFTING ADMITTED
THREE WOMEN BROUGHT BEFORE COURT.
ONE SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS OF AGE.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Shoplifting from city stores involving £75 worth of goods was admitted by three women who appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in Court this morning. They were Martha Jane Thompson, aged 75, Violet Annie Thompson, aged 32, and Charlotte Thompson, aged 45. Detective-Sergeant Sinclair said the accused had frankly admitted the offences. The eldest woman was obviously the leader. She said she had started taking things years ago, and now she could not stop. Mr W. F. Tracy, who appeared for the accused, said that the eldest woman was deaf and diabetic. One of the accused was definitely subnormal. Undoubtedly they wanted some sort of control and should be placed in some institution.
“It is not a case where any leniency can be considered,” commented the magistrate. Mr Tracy said he considered that because of the mentality of the accused it would be a waste of good money to send them to prison, and it would n reform them. He could not see anyi benefit by sending them to prison. The magistrate said he would remand the accused till Monday.
