NAW DEPARTMENT REPORT IN U.S.A. PROPOSAL TO STRENGTHEN BASES. WESTWARD AND SOUTHERN EXTENSIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WASHINGTON. January 3. The Navy Department rendered to Congress a special report recommending the strengthening of the continental defences by establishing new air bases and strengthening the existing naval bases. Particular reference was made to extending the Pacific, line of defence as far west as Guam Island, with strategic defence developments at Hawaii. Midway, Wake. Guam and other islands.
Developments are also recommended for Johnson. Palmyra, Canton and Rose Islands, thus strengthening the United States’ line of communications and defence in the south Pacific as well as in the west Pacific.
