STOCK MARKET
SALE AT ADDINGTON. PRICES EASIER ALL ROUND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 4. At the weekly stock sale at Addington today, with odd exceptions, there was an easing in all sections, particularly for fat and store sheep. The first store lambs of the season were penned, and for the greater part were of a good type. A line of 261 made to 17s Id; and another of 251 to 14s 9d, with the more backward sorts selling at Us 2d. The good condition of the lambs as a whole showed the favourable season existing for feed. Fat lambs on export schedule were down a farthing a lb, and prices .were accordingly easier for export sorts, but lambs bought for trade showed no change on 8d ruling previously for export.
The entry of fat sheep comprised about 5000 head compared with 5500 a fortnight ago, but the market was very disappointing, and a sharp drop in ewes, and a moderate one in wethers, was recorded. "Light ewes were down by 3s, light wethers by Is, with best wethers easier over the later stages of the sale by Is to Is 6d. Quotations: —
Sheep: Extra prime heavy wethers realised to 25s 4d; prime heavy, 21s to 235; prime medium, 17s 6d to 20s 6d; light to 14s 6d; extra prime heavy ewes, ti 21s 7d; prime heavy, 16s to 18s; prime medium, 12s to 15s; light, to 8s 6d. The fat cattle entry comprised 390 head compared with 470 a fortnight ago. Quality was mixed and the market opened easier than that of the last sale by about 10s a head for prime mediumweight cattle, and to 15s for heavy steers, and values varied little as the sale progressed. Many mediumweight steers and prime heifers ranged from 35s to 36s a 1001 b, with tops in a few cases to 37s 6d. Heavy beef sold in some cases down to 31s, with rough down to 255.
Cattle: Extra prime heavy steers realised to £l7 17s 6d; prime heavy, £l4 10s to £l6: prime medium, £l3 to £l4 10s; light, to £9 10s; extra prime heifers. to £l2- 17s 6d; prime, £9 15s to £11; light to £7; extra prime cows, to £ll 17s 6d; prime, £7 to £9; light to £5.
In the fat pig section the porker entry was the smallest for some time, but prices showed very little improvement on values of a fortnight ago. Choppers were in medium supply and met a satisfactory sale all round. Baconers were penned in average numbers, and values showed an easing of at least 5s because of the export schedule having been reduced by a farthing a lb. Pigs: Porkers realised 38s 6d to 59s 6d and the average price a lb was 6Jd to 7id; baconers made 56s 6d to £4 Is 6d, and the average price a lb, was 6d to 61d.
JOHNSONVILLE SALE. WELLINGTON, This Day. At the Johnsonville stock sale yesterday Wright Stephenson and Co offered an average yarding of all classes of cattle, sheep and lambs. Only a few pens of prime heavyweight bullocks came forward, the yarding consisting chiefly of mediumweights with a few pens of light and unfinished sorts. Extra prime heavy bullocks met a ready sale with no alteration, but medium and lightweight bullocks were slightly easier. All classes of cows and heifers met with a ready sale with no alteration. The yarding of runners and vealers, indifferent in quality, met with a good demand. The wethers penned were of exceptionally good quality with prices showing no alteration. Light wethers were easier by is a head. Prime heavy ewes were down 6d to Is, but light and mediumweight ewes met with no alteration. All prime quality lambs met a good sale with prices slightly above those ruling for export, but lightweight and plain lambs were Is to Is 6d a head easier. Quotations: —
