BRUTAL ASSAULT

GIRL STRUCK ON FACE & HEAD ASSAILANT LATER ARRESTED. SCENE NEAR SWING BRIDGE. A 16 years old Masterton girl. Eileen Devery. was the victim of a brutal assault near the hospital swing bridge at 10.30 this morning. She was walking up to the Masterton Hospital to receive massage treatment for a broken arm, which was still in a sling, when a man rode up behind her on a bicycle and struck her violently over the head and face.

The girl's screams were heard by a man coming across the bridge and as he went to her assistance, the assailant, a young man. made off into the trees

near the river. The girl received medical treatment and then washable to be taken h >me. The man left his bicycle

at the scene of the assault. Although the police were not notified until midday smart work resulted in an arrest being made at 2 p.m.
