The damage which occurred to the East Coast districts is believed in some quarters to be greatly responsible for the tremendous amount of traffic on the Napier-Wairoa road. Many of the tourists had been attracted to the East Coast districts to view the damage that had been done during the winter floods, and many more had learned of the scenic beauties of the route from other motorists in their home towns who had previously made the journey via Napier and Gisborne. The use of the highway bridge at Mohaka in place of the railway viaduct was being greatly appreciated by the tourists,
