Y.W.C.A. GIRLS
CAMP AT SOLWAY
ENJOYABLE TIME BEING SPENT. SPORTS AND GAMES. The Wellington Y.W.C.A. girls who are in camp at the Solway Showgrounds are experiencing fine weather for their camp, and have taken full advantage of it. One day was spent at Carter's Bush, where a very happy picnic group inspected the native bush. ■ Over the weekend . visitors to the camp have been .th'e Rbv John Davie, Mr and Mrs Mclnnes, of Wellington, Mrs Mclnnes being a member of the National Health Council is taking a very keen interest in the camp and it is expected that this will be the forerunner of many. more. Another visitor was Miss Bridgeman, secretary of the Wellington Y.W.C.A. . She has only recently returned from the Y.W.C.A.. World Convention held in Canada and her talk to the girls on the trip will long be remembered by all who were privileged to hear it. New Year’s Eve was a time of gaiety and happiness in the camp. A scavenger hunt was organised and to be successful each competitor had to collect as many of the listed articles as possible, such as a cup of creek water, the caretaker’s signature, a cherry loaf, etc. This amusing contest was won by the youngest girl in the camp, Miss Alison Mclnnes. With the campers divided into groups under the names of Wise Owls, Blue Gums, Kia Ora, Challengers, and Wayfarers, a series of competitive sports have been conducted, and the results are as follow:—
Swimming.—Blue Gums, 23 points, 1; Wise Owls, 14 points, 2; Kia Ora, 14 points, 3. Tennis. —Betty Tunnelly (Wise Owls), 6 points, 1; Mary Bennet (Wise Owls), 3 points, 2, ... Table tennis. —Kath. The contest for the most original camp song was won by the Wayfarers. A very impressive service was held on New Year’s Eve towards midnight, candles being lit to symbolise the past, present and future and a taller candle to represent 1939. Sunday morning saw camp service conducted by Miss Kirkwood. In the evening the girls were free to attend their respective churches. Several girls will break camp today and more will leave tomorrow, but at the same time a few more will arrive from Wellington, so the original number will be kept right up till the final day. Mrs Nicholson, camp hostess, is proving exceedingly popular with the girls and is indeed a real mother to them.
Miss Jackson, of the Y.M.C.A. staff, Wellington, arrived yesterday and will be staying for the remainder of tine camp.
