CAMERON CLAN
“AMBASSADOR AT LARGE.”
CONTRIBUTION TO PEACE.
Hopes that by the inspiration of the Cameron Clan all clans throughout the world will unite to ensure peace are cherished by Captain Evan Cameron, commander of the Orient liner Orford, which arrived in Auckland from Brisbane recently. Captain Cameron is “ambassador at large” of the Cameron Clan.
"The world is in a mess; the League of Nations has failed,” said Captain Cameron. "There are Cameron men in every country of the world. If they united they would be a big impetus toward peace. For the union of the Camerons would be followed by a union of all the clans, all over the world, to work for international brotherhood.
"The significance of this movement is that at at time when States like Germany and Italy are telling the world that the State is everything, we are showing that the individual is everything. We are out to serve as a clan, and voluntarily.
"Scotland is the only country in the world today which has this family system of clans,” he continued. "It is* the only country in the world which can be used as a via media to join America and other nations with the. British Empire. A man can remain a good German, a good American, and yet be a good Cameron, too, united with his fellows through his chief.” Captain Cameron said the clan programmes included the saving of clan estates and elan records in Scotland. The clan was to be neither political nor secretarian in its interests.
In the age-old Ashnacarry Castle (Field of the Weir), rebuilt in 1837 after having been burned down in 1746, a total of 700 Camerons met last June for the first time since 1745. Captain Cameron was among them. New Zealand was represented by Mr Eric Cameron, of Masterton.
Captain Cameron said the movement was making excellent progress in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In the Dominion there were branches in Auckland, z Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Masterton and Turakina.
