FRIDAY NIGHT SHOPPING. FAIRLY BRISK BUSINESS (“'Times-Age” Special.) Shopping in Carterton last evening was fairly brisk and storekeepers were kept fairly busy. The large crowds which thronged the "streets were very orderly. The parking of cars in the main street was prohibited, and the danger to people crossing the street was thus obviated. The pipe band paraded the street, and played spirited music, much to the enjoyment of the people and great satisfaction to the children. Bowling Club Games. Games in the club champonship fixtures have been advanced a further stage, as under: — Champion singles—Sorensen beat Hart, 18.-14. Colts' singles—Newbould beat Gaze, 23-15. Champion pairs—Harrington and Thompson (s), beat Newbould and Hughan (s), 20/10; Smith and Tucker (s), beat Robertson and Sorensen (s), 29-21. Pronounced Earthquake. A very pronounced earthquake shock was felt in Carterton at 2.21 p.m. yesterday. It was preceded by a loud rumbling noise, and the shake was of a swinging nature, followed by a smaller one later. Birthday Party. A large family gathering was held at the residence of Mr T. S. Arcus on Thursday, the occasion being the 84th birthday of Mr Arcus. A very pleasant time was spent in song, games and story. The guest of the evening was the recipient of birthday greetings. His health toasted, and a wish was expressed that he would see many more birthdays. Mr Arcus is enjoying fairly good health. During the celebrations members of the pipe band assembled unexpectedly at the residence and serenaded Mr Arcus with appropriate Scotch airs. Child Injured by Motor Car. Yesterday afternoon two young children, hand-in-hand, were crossing the safety zone near the Carterton Post Office, and a car driven by a lady collided with, one of them, with the result that its foot was injured. The child was picked up by Mrs Woods, and taken into Tier shop in High’ Street, and then taken to its home in Park Road. Personals. Mrs and Mrs Totihy, of Hunterville, are staying with Mrs Touhy’s parents, Mrs and Mrs Norman Williams, Garrison Street. Mr W. H. J. Ovens, a clerk in the P. and T. department, has been transferred from Nelson to Carterton. He has commenced his new duties. Mrs Ovens is on holiday in Dunedin, and will arrive in Carterton early in the New Year.

Mr J. Lenihan left Carterton yesterday for Petone where he will spend the New Year holidays.
