BOWLING CONTEST. FOR GRADY MEDALS. , ("Times-Age” Special.) Yesterday afternoon a match for the .Grady Medals was played oh the Greytown green between the holders, T. Connolly and H. Carter (s) and the challengers, W. C. Robertson and C. J. De Lacey (s). The green played exceptionally well, but the wind was tricky at times and the game fluctuated in the early stages. On the 19th end the. holders led 20 to 17. A long head which was well played by both sides left Greytown with 3 up and then came a lead of six which put the result beyond doubt. The visitors got one on the last end and the game ended 23/18. This is the sixth consecutive win the holders have had. A challenge has been forwarded for the champion rink badges held by Greytown. The challengers are Robertson, Smith, De Lacey and Tucker (s). The game will be played next Thursday. Christmas Trade. The “Times-Age” Carterton agent, in conversation with the manager of a local drapery establishment, was informed that Christmas trade had been exceptionally good. He mentioned that the vagaries of the weather had been the means of selling several tweed overcoats, an exceptional experience at Christmas time. Card Tournament. The weekly card tournament held under the auspices of the Boy Scouts was well attended. The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies, Mrs Ticehurst, Senr., 1; Mrs C. Meyrick, 2. Men: Mr Verrail (Petone) 1; Mr Morris 2. Supper was afterwards served enjoyed the function. Carterton Post Office. During the Christmas season the Carterton Post Office officials had a very busy time. Telegrams dispatched between December 16 to 23 totalled 678, an increase of 187 over the same period last year. The toll calls between December 16 and December 20 were 1802 for 1938, against 1432 for 1937. . Other business at the Post Office also showed a corresponding increase. Personal Items. Mr Wally Campbell, erstwhile of Carterton and now of Marton, is on ,a visit to the .town. He .will return home on Saturday. Mr W. Sorensen will leave early in the New Year to take part in the Dominion 1 bowling tournament, at Auckland. He will play in the singles and pairs competitions. i Mr R. E. Blade will leave for Tauniarunui at the weekend on a visit to his mother. , < .• Mrs C;‘ Stevfens, of Victoria Street, accompanied by her grandsons, left Carterton yesterday for Ohakune. Mr and Mrs Verrail, df Petone, who have been spending Christmas with Mrs Verrall’s parents, Mr and Mrs J. Lenihan, returned to Petone today. Mi’ Ross Hawker, of Carterton, and Mr Townsend, of Dalefield, are at present touring the North Island by motor car. They paid a visit to the Chateau and are now on their way to Rotorua. On the return journey they intend seeing the Waitomo, Ruakuri and Aranui Caves. They report that they have experienced fine weather. The friends of Mr W. B. Allen will regret to hear he is laid aside by illness. Small Fruit. A large consignment of small fruit, mostly black currants and ; red currants from the Greytown orchards, were forwarded from Carterton yesterday by rail for the Auckland market. A Good Potato Crop. One of the finest main crops of potatoes growm in the Carterton district for many years can be seen in a large tract of land in Frederick Street. ■■ -•
