EARLY MORNING FIRE
NOTABLE OLD HOMESTEAD DESTROYED. LINK WITH EARLY HISTORY OF SOUTH CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU, This Day. The old Luxmoore homestead, nearly 70 years old, just north of Timaru, was totally destroyed by a spectacular fire in the early hours of this morning. The house was occupied by Mr and Mrs Fahey, but the former was away on holiday and only Mrs Fahey was at home, with two children and her sister. The noise of the fire awoke Mrs Fahey soon after three o’clock. She immediately called me Timaru Fire Brigade, which left for the scene at once. By the time the brigade arrived, the centre of the roof had fallen in and, fanned by a strong wind, the flames soon made the saving of tne house itself impossible. It was all the brigade could do to save some outhouses, and only one dressing table was brought intact out of the building. Much valuable furniture was lost, but the insurance figures are not available.
The house was associated with earlj South Canterbury history, being buil: on the estate of Mr P. B. Luxmoore, an early settler from England.
P. Eastwood. 5 Perry Street, is Chief Agent for General Accident and Fire Assurance Corporation, Ltd. (Inc. in Scotland).*
