KEEN CONTESTS
MARTINBOROUGH TENNIS TOURNEV HAWKSWORTH WINS MEN'S TITLE. MISS J. BETTS AGAIN SUCCESSFUL. (“Times-Age” Special.) P. Hawksworth and Miss J. Betts both retained their singles titles at the Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club’s championship and handicap tourney, which was continued yesterday. Hawksworth played brilliant tennis in the final to defeat O. Bold, who provided the highlights of the tourney, in two sets. Miss Betts again revealed what a fine player she is when faced with strong opposition and after being well down in the second set she rallied and accounted for Miss J. St George (Auckland) in two sets. Apart from the men’s singles, one of the finest matches of the day was the final of the men’s doubles in which O. Bold and I. Willis wrested the title from Hawksworth and G. McLeod after two rattling good sets. The winners were too good in combination, courtcraft and, more especially, with their overhead work. Hawksworth was at peak form in his singles with Bold and he gave a brilliant exhibition. Bold played splendidly and retrieved like a tdrrier but he had no effective counter for the cleverly placed scorching shots of the Masterton player. It was one of the best finals seen at Martinborough in recent years. Miss Betts was a mixture of good and bad against Miss St George but the good patches came at the right end and she again scored a meritorious win. Mesdames Hawksworth and McLeod played consistently good tennis to retain their ladies’ doubles title.
Hawksworth, holder of the men’s single championship title, scored an unexpectedly easy win over B. Barrer. In spite of. the strong wind, Hawksworth controlled his shots admirably and his speed forced the usually consistent Barrer into errors.
O. Bold, the stylish young Wellington player, experienced little difficulty in defeating S. Oakley and reached the semi-finals.
W. Webster, a promising young Grey town player, provided strong opposition for G. S. McLeod but the latter’s experience and courtcraft stood him in good stead and he won out in three sets., Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth entered the final of the combined doubles with a good win over McPherson and Miss Betts.
N. Faulknor, who had played fine tennis through the tournament, stroked beautifully against Hawksworth and made the first set most interesting. Hawksworth came on to his game in the second set and won the match, 6/4, 6/1.
Miss Betts had an interesting duel with Miss Coull. The Wanganui girl played soundly but she was no match for the hard hitting and aggressive Miss Betts who won 6/2, 6/2. The tourney will be concluded today. Following are the results of yesterday’s play:—
