ANXIETY IN EGYPT
LINK WITH BRITAIN UPHELD ITALIAN ASPIRATIONS OPPOSED. OVERWHELMING MAJORITIES IN PARLIAMENT. (Received This Day, 9.0 a.m.) ’ CAIRO, December 29. Overwhelming majorities carrying the Address-in-Reply in Parliament reflect the anxiety of politicians regarding Italian aspirations and the disinclination to substitute an ItalianEgyptian for the British-Egyptian Treaty. ' There were only seven supporters of the Wafdist no-confidence motion. A Nationalist amendment opposing the treaty, with a provision for mutual support in the event of either being attacked, gained a solitary vote. The tenor of the speeches was that, while the British-Egyptian Treaty was not perfect, Egypt’s geographical position, if nothing else, compelled loyalty to it, especially in face of the fear that Egypt might become a battleground in the event of a conflict emerging from the present ten-’ sion.
