MIGRATION FIGURES
ARRIVALS EXCEED DEPARTURES. POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The number of immigrants, 3388, who arrived in New Zealand during the eight months ended November, 1938, was 1300 more than for the same period last year, and almost exactly double the number for the eight months of 1936. This information is contained in the Abstract of Statistics for December. The figures lor this year, too, are interesting because they reverse the position of the two previous years in which the number of new permanent residents arriving in the country was more than offset by the number of people leaving the Dominion permanently. Arrivals who intend to stay in this country so far this year outnumber departing New Zealanders who do not intend to come back by about 900—which means an increase in the population of more than 100 a month. The exact figures setting out the increase in the number of immigrants taking up residence here, and those departing (in each case permanently), > are as follow: — Eight months ended November. 1936 1937 1938 Arrivals 1696 2520 3388 Departures 2510 1545 2491
