HYDRANGEAS FOR POTS
PLANTS FOR NEXT SEASON. To obtain plants of hydrangeas to bloom in pots next season, the cuttings should be inserted now. Select shoots which have not flowered, cut them off below the third node or joint, remove the leaves from 'the lower half of the stem and insert round the edges of pots, filled with a sandy compost. Place the pots in a cold frame, keep them shaded and close until they have formed roots, then pot up the cuttings separately in three-inch pots. At this stage it is necessary to decide whether single stemmed plants carrying one immense truss of oioom. or bushy plants with several small trusses, are required. For the former, allow the plants to grow naturally without “stopping"; for the latter “stop” the plants by pinching out the tips. When they, are established in the three-inch pots, shift-the plants on to five-inch size. Use a compost of equal parts peat, leafmould, loam and sharp sand. During the winter keep the plants in a greenhouse or frame where they will be secure from frost.
