GUSTO A CONSISTENT HORSE

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Gusto has had only four starts this season, and his success in the Milburn Handicap marked his second win. In his previous two starts he has a second and a third to his credit this season. Wings. Night Wings confirmed her first day’s winning form at Wingatui by winning again when saddlefl up for the St Andrew's Handicap. Her rider rode a rather too confident race, and gave away a good start over the final three furlongs instead of being in a handy position at that stage of the race. A big risk is taken when a substantial lead has to be recovered when the pace becomes improved at the business end of a race. Why lose ground when the pace is slow. A Compliment. Atua Rere, the half-brother to Palermo, who won yesterday at Wingatui, marked a tribute to J. Dooley’s horsemanship, as a change of riders represented about four times as much support as he carried on the first day. Chirp. Chirp slightly strained herself when galloping prior to the Wingatui meeting, and hence' did not fulfil her engagements. The trouble may not prove serious. Won Well. ' Previous to his success in the Salisbury Handicap Straightdell has two seconds and a third to his credit out of five starts this season. Always well placed, lie took charge after turning for home and gave nothing a chance of catching him in the run home. Nightwings Wins Easily. Nightwings scored the easiest win of the day when she led the field home in the Otago Handicap. She is not engaged in the principal events at the Waikouaiti, Wyndham, or Oamaru meetings. Her record this season is ' now two wins and two seconds out of seven starts.

Unbeaten Record at Wingatui. When Second Innings started in the Burnside Handicap at Wingatui she was making her third appearance on this course, and started the heaviest backed starter during the afternoon. Second Innings’s success registered her third win, her previous wins being secured at the Winter Meeting last June. Gold Salute. Gold Salute broke it for a win in the Juvenile Handicap after running well in better company. Astral Flash. A 71b allowance helped Astral Flash to win the Fernhill Handicap, as she had nothing to spare beyond her winnings margin. Passaform. Passaform was finishing on better than Norseman in the Allanton Handicap, but a late run cost a good chance of a win. Thermidor. Thermidor stayed on best in the sticky going when sent out for the Farewell Handicap, and the manner in which she won surprised some of her regular supporters. Royal Style. Royal Style was sprinted three furlongs after the racing was concluded yesterday, but did not create any enthusiasm by the gallop. Recollection. Recollection will make a good hurdler with more experience. The heavy state of the going at Wingatui accentuated the strength and height of the hurdles, and cost him a good chance of winning. Dungarvan. It is reported that Dungarvan is to race at Marton, but that the rest of T. R. George’s team for Awapuni will go on to Tauherenikau. New Owner. Mrs E. L. Barnes, of Palmerston North, has entered the ranks of owners, having purchased • a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Lord Quex from Maid of the West. -The new purchase is a half-brother to Play On. It is understood that he is to be named Amyas Leigh, after the famous character from ‘■Westward Ho.” Lines of High Caste. By winning the Great Northern Foal Stakes in brilliant style, High Caste emulated the feat of his close relation Supremacy, who was successful in 1928. Both were bred by their owner, Mr A. J McGovern. High Caste being by the recently-imported Blandford horse Bulandshar. whose first progeny are showing outstanding promise, from The Begum, dam of the good winners, Stretto. Mazir and Arvakur. The Begum is by Chief Ruler from the Lucullus mare Lucella. and is therefore a full-sister to Supremacy. Globe Trotter’s Success. Globe Trotter, who has now won the last two of his three stars to date, and who in even his first outing showed unexpected speed out in front at the ■Wellington meeting in October, is demonstrating that, despite his somewhat unfashionable lineage, he is something about average. He may not have quite the brilliance of his stable companion, Beaulivre, but, with his wins to date in handicap class only, he should be easier to place for further successes curing the next few months.

A stocky brown gelding, with lop cars, but a sensible head and even temperament, he is by the Australian-bred

horse Safari, who-has as yet had only this one offspring to represent him. Safari, who was got at the Cullengoral Stud, New South Wales, in 1930, was by the Swynford horse March Along out of the Duke Foote —Quair Glass mare Duchess Glass, a granddaughter of imported Cheap Glass, half-sister to the dam of Son-in-Law. Safari was sent across to the Trentham sales as a yearling, where Mr W. Higgins bought him for 300 guineas. Mr Higins had him raced mainly in Sydney, but though he won a small event at Rcsehill he was a comparative failure on the Turf and he was retired shortly after his return to the Dominion as a four-year-old because he did not look like standing up to further training.

Mr Higgins will have particular gratification in the success of Globe Trotter, as the gelding is a home-bred produce at his Waikanae farm. The dam, Sight Draft, is a brown mare by Paper Money out of the Roseworthy— Gaze mare Gazeworthy, so that she is a full-sister to Noteworthy, who has a good winner in the South Island. Sight Draft showed speed herself as a juvenile, and at that age she won the Midsummed Handicap at Ellerslie for Mr Higgins, beating Cylinder by a length and a half. . Gazeworthy, a halfsister to the V.R.C. Essendon Stakes and V.A.T.C. Toorak Handicap winner Stare, was secured as a yearling at the 1921 Sydney Sales for 90 guineas, and she too was a- useful winner in two short seasons on the turf for Mr E. L. Riddiford, for whom she won her first two races, and then three other in a dozen starts in all. -
