TODAY’S PLAY GOOD MATCH IN MEN'S SINGLES. NUMBER OF SEMI-FINALS DECIDED. The Martinborough Tehhis Tournament was continued today. A high cross-court wind interfered considerably with play and made accuracy particularly overhead, difficult. The weather is fine. Hawksworth, holder of the men’s single championship title, scored an unexpectedly easy win over B. Barrer. In spite of the strong wind, Hawksworth controlled his shots admirably and his speed forced the usually consistent Barrer into errors.
O. Bold, the stylish young Wellington player, experienced little difficulty in defeating S. Oakley and reached the semi-finals.
W. Webster, a promising young Greytown player, provided strong opposition for G. S. McLeod but the latter’s experience and coutrcraft stood him in good stead and he won out in three sets.
Hawksworth and Mrs HaWkSWorth entered the final of the combined doubles with a good win over McPherson and Miss Betts.
N. Faulknor Who had played fine tennis, through the tournament stroked beautifully against Hawksworth and made the first set most interesting. Hawksworth came on to his game in the second set and won the match, 6/4, 6/1.
Miss Betts had an interesting duel with Miss Coull. The Wanganui girl played soundly but she was no match for the hard hitting and aggressive Miss Betts who Won 6/2. G/2. Results are:—

NOTED PLAYERS DEFEATED AT CHRISTCHURCH. BROWN AND ANGAS LOSE DOUBLES. (By Telegranh—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Those who hoped that the Canterbury lawn tennis championships would give a line on form for the Dominion tournament have been sadly disappointed. Surprise upsets have occurred every day and today two more were added to the list when H. A. Barnett was eliminated and Angas and Brown encountered a similar fate in the semifinal of the doubles. The defeat of Barnett does not rank as a major upset, but the ease with which the young Aucklander. J. W. Gunn, accomplished it astonished the gallery. Barnett was forced into errors and he found that even his amazing retrieving ability could not ‘stand the strain of his opponent's attack. A youthful combination in Pattinson
and Penfold carried on the work of UpSetting the seeding committee’s calculations today, for they defeated Brown and Angas, favourites for the tnen’s doubles title, in a hard and at times brilliant match. Conditions were unpleasant today, sweltering conditions prevailing early this morning, while later a strong wind sprang up and rain clouds gathered. Results: — Men’s singles.—Semi-finals: J. T.
