Messrs A. S. Dymock (Wanganui i and M. Macrae have returned home after having been the guests of Mr A. Hay. of Ballance.
The death occurred at Lansdowne this morning of Mr H. T. Hume, a very old settler of the Wairarapa and resident of Masterton. at the age of 78 years. The funeral will be a private one.
The Rev David McNeur, Mrs McNeur and family are spending a holiday in the Auckland district. The Rev R. Dickie is in charge of the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church during Mr McNeur’s absence. Colonel E. Puttick. D. 5.0.. N.Z.S.C., is to relinquish the appointment of adjutant and quartermaster-general and Second Military Member of the Army Board, and is to take over the duties of officer commanding the Central Military District, Wellington. Mr J. D. Anderson, who has been manager at Wanganui for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., for the last 15 years, is to retire on superannuation at the end of the year. He has been in the service of the company for nearly 40 years.
The interment of the late Mrs J. I Thompson, of Taueru, took place at the: Masterton Cemetery this morning, m the presence of a large and representative gathering of friends and relatives. The Rev E. J. Rich officiated.' Many beautiful wreaths were in evU dence. Messrs T. McLaughlan, E. McLaughlan, S. Cooper, J. P. Lett, E. J. Loader and H. Duffy acted as pallbearers.
The manager of the Bank of New Zealand branch in Gisborne, Mr A. H. Wilson, who will retire on March 31 on completion of 44 years’ service, joined the bank in Thames, his birthplace, and after several years was transferred to Paeroa. He returned to Thames as accountant, and subsequently occupied a similar position in Greymouth. A few years later he was back in Paeroa as manager, and from that post he was transferred to Thames. Just under 10 years ago Mr Wilson was appointed manager - in Gisborne.
The funeral of the late Mrs D. M. Douglas, which took place in Masterton yesterday, was largely attended. The Rev J. Davie conducted a service at the residence, Pownall Street, and also officiated at the graveside. Among the many beautify! wreaths in evidence were those sent by the following: Knox Church managers and session, Knox Ladies’ Guild, Knox Girls’ Bible Class, Wairarapa branch of the Solway Old Girls’ Association and the president and members of the Masterton Bowling Club. Messrs H. J. Jones, Alex Donald, T. F. Watson, J. L. Murray, A. M. Henderson and W. D. P. Kitching acted as pall-bear-ers.
The sudden death occurred in Sydney on Monday of Mr George William McGill, of Ellice Avenue. Wellington. Mr McGill, who was 96 years of age, was the son of the late Mr William McGill,, monumental mason, Wellington, who erected and was the owner of the McGill Buildings, in Willis Street (between Boulcott Street and the Majestic Theatre). Mr George McGill learned the trade in his father’s yard, but retired from the business more than 20 years ago. Of recent years he had been a sufferer from asthma, andleft for Sydney on a health trip two months ago. The change seemed to have benefited him and the news of his death from heart failure came as a shock to the members of his family in Wellington.
Dr P. C. Calvert, who is to take up a position at the Porlrua Mental Hospital, sailed from London, accompanied by his wife, on December 8. Dr Calvert was educated at Dulwich College and took his medical training at Westminster Hospital, where, after qualifying, he held appointments as casualty officer and house surgeon. His specialised experience in mental disorders has been gained at. the Bexley Mental Hospital, of the London County Council, and as house physician at the Bethlem Royal Hospital. For the last year he has been assistant medical officer at the Herrison Hospital, Dorchester, Dorset. He, therefore, has had fully up-to-date experience, for research and modern treatment are carried' out at the hospitals named.
