TASMAN AIR SERVICE

DEVELOPMENT OF BASE AT AUCKLAND. BUILDINGS TO BE ERECTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. ' The Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) said today that Cabinet had approved the provision of additional .base facilities for the trans-Tasman service at Auckland. A building 160 feet by 40 feet deep, with a height of 30 feet, was being provided at Hobsonville where flying-boats would be taken up on a slipway for repair and the removal and replacement of engines. A workshop building 120 feet by 100 feet was being provided at Mechanic’s Bay for repairs to engines and frames and for the housing of stores. A small engine test house was also being built there, and an administration building for the booking and meteorological officers. The work was being undertaken by the Edw'ards Construction Company and it was expected that a start would be made on January 4. The Auckland Harbour Board is undertaking the provision of the necessary landing stage, pontoon and gangways, and will also arrange to clear the site for the building contractor.
