SHAKESPEARE MEMORIAL
GARDEN IN ONTARIO. STRATFORD. Rosemary and thyme from the Shakespearean town of Stratford-on-Avon, England, were recently planted in the Shakespeare Memorial Garden at Stratford, Ontario, at a fitting ceremony in which the traditions of the famous poet and playwright were recounted. “Both plants, the rosemary and wild thyme are characteristic English plants so we may look upon them today as deeply symbolic of the connection between the Motherland and her Dominion across the sea.” With these words uttered by a representative of the local city, the present from far-off England was carefully planted. The seeds were a present from the mayor of Stratford-on-Avon to the mayor of Stratford, Ontario, and were sent to complete a unique collection of Old Country flowers and plants growing profusely in the Shakespeare Memorial Garden. The seeds were grown in a local nursery and the bushes were not transplanted until they were sufficiently advanced to weather the Canadian winters.
