NAVAL DEFENCE
SOUTH AFRICAN PLANS THE RECENT DISCUSSIONS IN LONDON. CONSIDERABLE EXPENDITURE PROPOSED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, December 21. Asked in the House of Commons whether the opportunity was taken in the visit to London of Mr O. Pirow, South African Minister of Defence, to consider the adequacy of arrangements for the naval defence of South Africa in time of war, Mr Malcolm MacDonald said that the object of Mr Pirow’s visit was to discuss certain technical aspects of the defence of South. Africa, including naval defence. The questions were settled as a result of discussions, but, as to the details, he could not anticipate any statement Mr Pirow might make after his return to South Africa, since that was a matter for the Union Government. Mr MacDonald added that Mr Pirow recently announced very considerable expenditure regarding defence and a good deal of money involved was in relation to naval defence.
