TJie Rev C. G. Scrimgeour has resigned his commission as a chaplain to the New Zealand Military Forces. The Hon H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, left Wellington for Auckland by the Main Trunk express yesterday. Mr Gordon Milne, of Masterton, has been appointed a Government health inspector. He takes up his duties at Hamilton at an early dale.

The Hon W. Nash, Minister of Finance, is leaving Wellington today for a respite in the country. The date of his return to Wellington is indefinite. Mr H. B. Hawthorn, M.Sc.. 8.A., who recently went to Honolulu to pursue his studies at the University of Hawaii -in- Terms of a research scholarship, has accepted a part-time position on the staff of the university. Brigadier Charles Bear, manager of the Auckland Salvation Army People’s Palace, retired' on Monday after 40 years’ active service, and a valedictory ceremony was conducted that night by Lieutenant-Commissioner F. Adams, territorial commander for New Zealand. Brigadier Bear intends to make his home in Australia.

The funeral in Auckland yesterday .of Mr Selwyn Averill, son of Archbishop Averill, was largely attended by of the clergy, legal profession, local bodies, and citizens. Christ’s College, Christchurch, of which he was a former student, was represented by Mr J. V. Tyree, president, and members of the Old Boys’ Club, Auckland. The chief mourners were Archbishop and Mrs Averill. Canon Averill, Dr Leslie Averill, and the Rev L. E. and Mrs Cartridge. The retirement of Mr F. A. Hempieman, headmaster of the Marton Junction School, this month, ends a career in the teaching service which included long periods on the staffs of two Wellington schools. He was a master at the old Crofton School, Marton, and became the first headmaster of the new Junction School. Before going to the district he was •at the Brooklyn School for 12 years, and before that again was 16 years at the Mount Cook School.

According to late advice from England, Mr W. R. Watson, son of Mr and 'Mrs James Watson, Masterton, who is a candidate for the Royal Air Force, has already passed the test for his A pilot’s licence. In his preliminary examination, he secured very high honours in engineering knowledge and practical flying, and apparently his studies were so far advanced that it is anticipated that he will by now have been admitted as a member of the Royal Air Force. Mr Watson is well known in Masterton, and his many friends will be pleased to learn of his rapid progress. Mr J. S. Fleming, chief clerk of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, or divisional clerk, as he .s officially designated,' will retire at the end of this month after 37 years’ service. Mr Fleming joined the department in 1901 as a temporary clerk it the Moumahaki Experimental Farm, .mder the Fields Division. He was .ransferred to the Dairy Division in 1903, when he took up duties as grader’s clerk in New Plymouth. In 1905 le was transferred to Wellington and in 1909 was promoted to divisional elerk. Mr Fleming has been a memoer of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society for a number of years. In his youth he played senior cricket for the jld Phoenix Club and was also a well-known Rugby football player. On behalf of the staLT, the director of the Dairy Division, Mr W. M. Singleton, yesterday made a presentation to Mr Fleming and wished him all happiness and prosperity.
