AMALGAMATED THEATRES
FILMS FOR 1939. MANY MAJOR PRODUCTIONS. Details of films to be shown during 1939 at theatres in New Zealand controlled by Amalgamated Theatres Ltd., have been announced by the managing director, Mr J. R. Moodabe. The films ’’’’ll he shown in Masterton at the State Theatre. They are uie proauctions of Gaumont British Dominion Films Ltd., 20th CenturyFox, United Artists and R.K.O. Studios. Admirers of George Bernard Shaw will be intrigued by the screen version of his famous play “Pygmalion,” which created a sensation in England and America. Another outstanding production will be a first screening of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, “The Mikado.” It has been filmed in technicolour with a first-class English cast. Ben Travers, the author of "Rookery Nook” and “Cuckoo in the Nest,” will be represented by “So This is London.” The “Daring Age” will
star Pascha Heifetz, one of the world’s greatest violinists, in a fascinating romance. “The Four Feathers,” a success in silent form, will appear as a talkie, and Cary Grant will star in Rudyard Kipling’s “Gunga Din.” The Dionne quintuplets are to figure in “Five of a Kind,” and “Topper” is to make a welcome reappearance in “Topper Takes a Tour.” A gem of English fiction is brought to the screen by the presentation of Emily Bronte’s “Wurthering Heights.” “Wife, Husband and Friend” will feature Warner Baxter, Loretta Young -and Binnie Barnes. The Ritz Brothers will be seen in Dumas’s “The Three Muskateers,” and Tyrone Powe:, and Henry Fonda in , “Jesse James,” a etory of a Montana outlaw. THE YEAR’S PROGRAMME. •’? The films for 1939 include:— Twentieth Century-Fox:—“My Lucky .Star” and “Castles in Norway,” with Sonja Henie; “Suez,” with Tyrone Power, Loretta Young and Annabella; ‘Just Around the Corner,” “The Little Princess,” “Susannah of the Mounties ” with Shirley Temple; “Kentucky,” m technicolour, starring Loretta Young; “Jesse James,” in technicolour, will: Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda; ‘Five of a Kind,” with the Dionne Quintuplets; “Wife, Husband and Friend,” with Warner Baxter, Loretta Young and Binnie Barnes; “Submarine Patrol,” with Richard Greene and George Bancroft; “Thanks for Everything,” a musical film, starring Adolphe Menjou; “Girl from Brooklyn,” starring Alice Faye, Warner Baxter, Charles Winninger; “Tail Spin,” with Alice Faye, Constance Bennett, Charles Farrell; “Alexander Graham Bell,” featuring Tyrone Power; “Rose of Washington,” “The Three Musketeers,” “Straight Place and Show,” with the Ritz Brothers. There will also be a series of Jones Family stories, Charlie Chan stories, and the. Jane Withers series.
