PLUM FOR MASTER HOTSPUR
(By “The Cynic.”)
It it reported that Master Hotspur bears a bright appearance, but he is being restricted to useful exercise and will not have to race again until the autumn. After his first effort in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton his subsequent form was disappointing, but there will be plenty of time for him to prove that the form was not his best. A Sensation. A sensation has been caused in racing circles by the dismissal from the Ceylon Turf Club of Major J. O. Hanwell, the starter, appointed six months ago from the Royal Calcutta Turf Club at a salary of £lOOO a year. The race for the Serpentine Stakes at a recent meeting was a fiasco. Don Ceasar, a hot favourite, was left at the post. The jockey followed the field at a walking pace, and a crowd of 30,000 booed the official so that the police had to be called. Revived Memories. Memories of the sensational aftermath of Prince Humphrey’s success in the A.J.C. Derby of 1928 were recalled when Unafraid (Heroic —Shepherd Princess) won at Canterbury Park (Sydney) recently. Unafraid’s dam figured also as the dam of Prince Humphrey when the latter won the classic, but later it was discovered that Prince Humphrey and another Duke Humphrey yearling, sent to New Zealand at the same time, had become mixed in transit,.and that the Derby winner was actually by Duke Humphrey from Princess Hazel. Great Western Steeplechase Winner. Possum, winner of the Great Western Steeplechase at Riverton last Easter, is booked to make his first appearance this season in the hurdle race to be run at the Cattle Flat Meeting. Stretto. Stretto is galloping well in her work, and. despite a load of 9.7, is expected to shape well in the Railway Handicap. Disdain’s Rider. H. N. Wiggins, who has been engaged to ride Disdain in the Railway Handicap, won on Stretto last year. War Admiral. War Admiral, the best horse sired by Man o’ War, is to join his sire at the Faraway Stud next spring, says an American exchange. His book is already full at 1,500 dollars, with 10 per cent additional to ensure a live foal. In his first season he is being limited to 15 mares. Man o’ War has always been limited to 25 mares in a season.
Padishah and High Caste.
A mile gallop by the Auckland Cup top-weight Padishah and a smart five furlongs by High Caste were outstanding trials at Ellerslie on Saturday morning. The course proper, with the poles out 55ft, was open, but the going was soft. Included in the arrivals were the Cup candidates, Willie Win and Mazir. Bronze Emerald (Cammick) began in front of Chelandry (Tremain) at the half-mile post and at the finish was a length in front, to record 53sec. Chelandry's time was 52 2-ssec. Bronze Emerald appeared to have a little in hand. After running the first furlong in 13 4-ssec, Aero King (Tremain) was not troubled to get to the end of half a mile in 56 4-ssec. Blonde Princess (Mclnally) broke away from the seven-furlong post and after running to the three furlongs in 56sec, was eased up. She hit out with dash and is in fine trim. Palmint (Gilchrist) and Erination (Tremain) were associated over six furlongs in 1.23 1-5, the first three taking 41 2-ssec. Palmint impressed the more. Electric Flash (Stokes) strode over seven furlongs, averaging a little better than 15s. With the assistance of Glen Abb (Markwick), Padishah (Forsyth) traversed a mile in 1.46 1-5. the first "half occupying 52 2-ssec. Although there was not much between them at the finish, Padishah was going much the better. He looks in great condition. Taurangi's Double. The Oete Handicap at Woodville was a triumph for the stable of D. T. Marks, its two representatives, Taurangi and Smoke Screen, finishing first and second clear of the rest. The result, however, was not so palatable for the public, as Taurangi was at double figures, whereas Smoke Screen was one of the four horses who claimed most of the betting. Marks won other races with Red Cat and Ruatiti, and again with taurangi on the second day. Taurangi won again on the second day. and is a three-year-old filly by Beau Pere from the Australian-bred Top Gallant mare (Barbacan. She carried the colours of Mr W. M’A. Duncan} who bought her for 525gns at the yearling sales.
Alma and Milford Nicely Treated. When Ardchoille outstayed Mona's Song to beat her by a head in the Southland Cup last month they each carried 7.0, and the former will have to concede Mona’s Song 41b if they v meet in the Otago Handicap to be run ever half a furlong further. Alma had 8.6 and finished two lengths away third, after striking trouble on the turn into
the straight. In the Otago Handicap she will meet Ardchoille on 91b and Mona's Song on 51b better terms, and should account for both of them. Milford, who was also interfered with when making a forward move at the home turn, carried 9.4 at Invercargill, 51b more than he is set to carry in the Otago Handicap, and if the stable apprentice, who has ridden him in most of his races this season, is put up he will only carry 8.6, and with that impost. only three-quarters of a , pound more than he had in the Mertopolitan Handicap on the concluding day at Riccarton last month, he should prove to be one of the hardest to beat. Milford won the Waikaka Handicap, eight and a-half furlongs, on the first day of the Gore Meeting last October, carrying 8.9, with Night Wings 7.6, and Last Refrain 9.1, in the places, and Valantua 7.12, Petersham 8.8, and Ardchoille 7.2. He is now handicapped to meet Night Wings on 91b, Last Refrain on 141 b, Valantua on 31b and Petersham on 101 b worse, and Ardchoille on even terms.
