CHRISTMAS TREE

STORIES OF ITS ORIGIN. Many stories have been told of the origin of the Christmas tree. A popular belief is that it had its beginning with St Winfrid, the German saint. He was about to hew down a great oak tree as a Druidical worship. But it crashed, prematurely blown by a strong wind, and everything' in its path was destroyed. Only one slender fir tree remained upright, pointing significantly to the sky. And thereafter it was called the “Christ tree.” In Palestine ihe tale is told of how Adam’s son. acquiring a branch of the tree, planted it on his father’s grave. It withstood the Flood, and was used in the construction of the Temple. Eventually it was cut down to make the Cross.
