CARE ON THE ROADS.

MOST excellent results have been attained by the road safety campaign lately conducted under the direction of the Minister of Transport and his Department. In a statement last evening, for example, Mr Semple mentioned that nine days had passed without a fatality on the roads and that previously only one period of more than six days free from a fatal road accident had been recorded. The real test will come during the days of extraordinarily heavy traffic on the roads that are anticipated in the holiday period about to open, and particularly during the Christmas and New Year weekends.

Official precautions are being taken by the appointment of additional traffic inspectors, some of whom will be on all-night duty during peak periods of traffic, but it remains for the individual motorist to make the contribution of vigilant and constant care, with all due consideration for others, that will avert fatal or other accidents on the roads. As an indication of what is possible, the experience of the late campaign is most encouraging and all concerned should be eager to see that experience extended and improved upon. The campaign called for care and consideration on the roads, not at a particular period, but at all times. What is needed during the holiday period is.not so much the exercise of special care as a steady and continued observance of the care that is needed always. Every road user should take pride in helping to cut down the depressing title of death and injury on the roads of the Dominion.
