CARTERTON

(“Times-Age” Special.) Matarawa Party. The old school building at Matarawa was packed last evening when the children of of the district were entertained by the residents. A Christmas Tree party had been arranged, and as a result each child received a Christ? mas present from the hanos of Father Christmas.

Mr Hector Bai sett, who presided, stated that although there was now no school in the district, the old committee still had the interest of the children at heart and had arranged the Christmas Tree for their benefit. He thanked those who were present for having come along in such large numbers and all who had in any way assisted.

Before Father Christmas distributed his presents the children who now attend the Greytown School., with the assistance of some of their class mates from Greytown, gave a delightful concert, which was greatly appreciated. Before dispersing, supper 'was provided and greetings for the festive season were extended to all present by those who had organised the function. Borough Council. Breaking-up Ceremony.

The breaking-up of the School was held in the State Theatre yesterday afternoon when the whole of the children of the Main and South schools assembled to take part in the ceiemony. There were also a number of parents present. The proceedings were opened with a Christinas Carol, “Good King Wenceslas.” which was well rendered. This was followed by two school items. The' headmaster called upon the Chairman of the Committee to say a few words to the children and Mrs McKenzie to distribute certificates won by the children. Mr McKenzie, in addressing the children, said that when he was a little boy and he was a little boy once, that he was taught to do the right thing during his school holidays. He hoped that the children would take heed of things while away from school, watch carefully the motor traffic when crossing roads, keep away from strange bathing pools and other places where danger lurked. By so doing no harm would befall them. When school reassembled they would all be keen after the six weeks’ respite, to come back to school and do their very best to fit themselves for the future which life holds for them. It was only by hard work and diligent study that children could expect to reach the top rung of the ladder of fame. He hoped they would strive to reach this position (applause). On behalf of the School Committee he wished the children and their parents a joyous festive season. The headmaster (Mr W. E. Fossett)

called the names of the children who had received Certificates of Merit and Mrs McKenzie presented them to the children. The headmaster thanked the chairman and members of the Committee for the work they had done for the children and the school generally. It was the first time since he took charge of the school that he had had the pleasure of having the whole of the children of both schools together. He congratulated them upon the work they had put in at school and felt sure they would come back after their holiday fresh and well again for school work. He wished them all a Happy Christmas and a Joyous New Year, which the children reciprocated and cheers ended a happy gathering.
