FROZEN MEAT TRADE
LONDON QUOTATIONS.
CHILLED BEEF PRICES FIRMER.
Lamb market: Stocks of New Zealand old season’s practically exhausted. Australian weaker owing to heavy arrivals and slow trade. Mutton market: Wethers and ewes, trade quiet and prices where changed slightly lower. Beef market: Frozen beef meeting with good demand. Chilled beef, firmer this week owing to lighter supplies. N.Z. porker pigs: Prices firmer. N.Z. Baconer pigs: Nominal, owing to very few available. Boneless bobby veal: Trade still slow.
The above report was received yesterday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned, and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market. Prices for the previous week are shown in parentheses:— N.Z. sheep: Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 481 b and under, 4jd (4 7-8 d); 491 b to 561 b, 4 l-8d (same); 571 b to 641 b, 4 l-8d (same); 651 b to 721 b, 4 l-8d (same); ewes, 481 b and under, 3d (same); 491 b to 561 b, 2gd (same); 571 b to 641 b, 2£d (25-8 d 651 b to 721 b, 23-8 d (same). Australian lambs: Victorian, Ist quality, 291 b to 361 b, 7£d (7Jd); 371 b to 421 b, 7d (7 l-8d). Argentine lambs: Ist quality, 361 b and under, 6Jd (7); 371 b to 421 b, 6£d (6 5-8 d).
N.Z. frozen beef: Second quality, ox hinds, 1451 b to 2101 b, 4 l-8d (same); ox fores, 1451 b to 2101 b, 3 l-8d (3fd). Australian frozen beef: Second quality, ox hinds, 4}d (same); ox crops, 3Jd (same).
N.Z. porker pigs: Ist quality, 61 lb to 801 b, 7 5-8 d (7Jd); 811 b to 1001 b, 7Jd (same); 1011 b to 1201 b, 63d (6 5-8 d); N.Z. baconer pigs: 121 lb to 1601 b, 6d (same).
Boneless bobby veal: Ex store in parcels, 4|d (same). N.Z. chilled beef: Ox hinds, 1451 b to 2101 b, 5Jd (same); ox fores, 1451 b to 2101 b, 3|d (same). Australian chilled beef: Ox hinds, 5 5-Bd. (53d); ox crops, 3 5-8 d (3Jd).
South Africa chilled beef: Ox hinds, 5 7-8 d (not quoted); ox fores, 3fd (not quoted).
Southern Rhodesian chilled beef: Ox hinds, 6|d (s|); ox fores, 3|d (3 3-8 d). Argentine chilled beef: Ox hinds, 6 3-8 (63d). Argentine chilled beef: Ox hinds, 6 3-8 d (63d); ox fores, 4d (same). Uruguayan chilled beef: Ox hinds, 6 l-8d (5 7-8 d); ox fores, 3 7-8 d (33d).
Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated December 15, 1938: Frozen meat quotations (prices on a “delivered” basis, i.e., including storage charges, cartage, market tolls, etc): —Best North Island wether sheep under 481bs, 43d per lb; 48/561bs, 4 l-8d per lb; 56/641bs, 4 l-8d; 64/721bs, 4 l-Bd. North Island ewes, under 481bs, 3d per lb; 48/56’s, 2.3 d; 56/64‘s 21d; 64/721bs, 23-8 d per lb. Compared with last week’s quotations wethers under 481bs l-8d per lb lower; ewes 56/641bs l-8d per lb lower. Other unchanged. The market is quiet, with a general downward tendency for lambs.
