NAVY & AIR FORCE
NEW BASE ESTABLISHED IN CEYLON LINKED WITH SINGAPORE. IMPORTANT STRATEGIC ASSET. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 1.0 p.m.) LONDON. December 16. The “Daily Telegraph’s” aviation correspondent says that Royal Air Force Sunderland machines, which have their base at Singapore, are actively surveying a trans-ocean route between Singapore and Trincomalee (Ceylon), where a million and a half sterling air and naval base has been established. The harbour, which is described by the Admiralty as one of the world’s most perfect in strategical value, is half-way between Aden and Singapore. It is recognised that it may be more important if the Japanese persuade Siam to allow the cutting of a canal through the Malay Peninsula, by-passing Singapore.
