THE VOORTREKKERS
CENTENARY OBSERVANCES IN SOUTH AFRICA
CONDITIONS OF SUBDUED EXCITEMENT.
WAGONS TRAVERSE PIONEER ROUTE.
(Received This Day, 10.2 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, December 15
The eve of the laying of the foundation stone of the Voortrekker Centenary Memorial finds the country in a state of subdued excitement. Englishspeaking people have done their utmost to recognise the Afrikaan’s sentiment and have responded in the principal towns to every suggestion to add significance to the historic event. Forty thousand people are encamped on a kopje overlooking Pretoria, where the stone will be laid tomorrow.
The arrival of wagons, which traversed roads taken by the voortrekkers, and torch-bearers carrying Van Riebeek’s diary and Retier’s treaty with Dingaan, symbolising the spread of culture, induced wild enthusiasm. There were bonfires on all hill-tops, while a choir of 5000 children sang hymns.
